With 11,600 members in 21 sectors, Umoja "Solidarity" farmers produce beautiful fully washed coffees from the slopes between Lake Kivu and the Mitumba mountain range. The farmers grow various varietals dominated by Red Bourbon mingled with other Bourbon varieties grown on volcanic soil at an altitude between 1400-2000 meters. In the 10 years farmers have been growing specialty coffee cooperatively the sale of Umoja coffees have helped to improve the living conditions of its members. This has provided schooling, housing, jobs and reducing coffee smuggling on Lake Kivu, while promoting women’s and pygmy rights. Umoja producers won the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) sustainability award.
